5 Exercises You Are Not Doing That Could Improve Your CrossFit

If you are an avid CrossFitter, you have heard this phrase before: “Constantly varied, functional movements at high intensities.” CrossFit athletes pride themselves on being ready for any athletic event at any time, training across multiple training modalities that include running, biking swimming, weightlifting, jumping, and gymnastics. While any well-developed CrossFit program does cover a lot of ground, there are a few exercises I feel that CF folks would benefit from that I very rarely see these in a CrossFit program.

Some may argue that since certain exercises will never be included in a CrossFit event, they are not worth taking the time to do. I beg to differ. Would you tell Kelly Starrett that his mobility WOD was worthless, just because you wouldn’t see his corrective exercise drills in a WOD at your local competition or during the CrossFit Games Open? I don’t think so.ReadMore

7 Reasons Why Your Child Should Practice Martial Arts

Reason #1: They (and You) Will Get More Active

This is the obvious reason kids should do martial arts in this day and age - to get active and moving. In case you haven’t noticed, we have an epidemic when it comes to our nation’s obesity problem. We’re also increasingly unfit in addition to being overweight. The problem is particularly alarming as itrelates to our kids. Youth sports and physical education programs are great, but not every kid is an athlete and many schools no longer offer PE. The martial arts offer many benefits, but when it comes to fitness, becoming a true martial artist means becoming a supremely fit person.Readmore

3 Simple Ways to Heal a Stiff, Sore, or Injured Neck

In the case of a cervical strain/sprain, there are a number of things that can be done to facilitate healing. As a licensed acupuncturist I have been trained in numerous treatments and protocols to help this condition, but I wanted to pick techniques that wouldn’t require any special knowledge or training to do. These three therapeutic techniques are intended to be used after the acute-phase of the injury, which is the first four days after the incident.
Remember that after a neck strain/sprain, the muscles in the neck will often become tight, guarding the affected area and limiting motion and mobility.Anything that can be done to safely alleviate muscle tension, improve range of motion, and promote blood circulation to the affected area, is going to help the healing process.ReadMore

What Women Need to Know About Growth Hormone (and How to Maximize It)

Growth Hormone, Estrogen, and Testosterone

First, we make more growth hormone than men. Weird, right? It’s a pretty darn anabolic hormone and given that men are generally so much bigger and more muscular than us ladies, it seems odd that we make more. How is it we aren’t hulking she-beasts? Well, while there aren’t a lot of studies out there discussing this, I feel we don’t get as muscular as men largely due to the fact we do not make as much testosterone as men. Yes, while we make a lot of growth hormone, without coupling that with testosterone, muscle growth is limited.Readmore

4 Things to Do and 3 Things to Stop to Naturally Increase Your Testosterone

1. Don't buy stupid stuff.

Don’t buy or take any supplement with EXTREME, XXX, or any ridiculous play on the word steroids. I know, the guy in the picture is huge and the product says that it’s actually banned in some countries. Amazing. It’s most likely filled with enough caffeine and other stimulants to make you feel great during your workout, once you get over your shaky hands and grinding teeth, but will wear you out over time and keep you awake at night. If I could get all of the money back I spent on supplements with tough sounding names in my twenties, I’d be writing this from my own private island. Save your money; buy vegetables.

Top Ten Ways to Test Your Body

After all, if you don’t know what’s going on inside your body, then how do you know you’re not one of those people who are healthy on the outside, but unhealthy on the inside? And if you struggle with anything like brain fog, constipation, bloating, low libido, poor sleep, or slow workout recovery, then you probably fall into the category of people who need to test their body.

As a matter of fact, even if you’re exercising hard and eating healthy, it turns out that what’s actually going on inside your body can be quite disturbing, and include:
  • Low testosterone and high cortisol, manifesting in overtraining symptoms, low libido, lack of motivation, and loss of competitive drive.
  • Low luteinizing hormone, high estrogens, and low progesterone, manifesting in brain fog, appetite cravings, and a seeming inability to shed fat despite lots of training.
  • High thyroid-stimulating hormone and low thyroid hormones, resulting in a constant feeling of being cold, sluggish metabolism, and impaired digestive function, gas, and bloating.Readmore

10 things that should never go in the fridge

After spending time in the grocery store, your sole goal when you get home is to put everything away as quickly as possible. You throw thepantry stuff in the pantry and cold stuff in the fridge and call it a day. But really what you’re doing is creating a return trip to the store a lot sooner.

Believe it or not, you could be putting grocery items in your fridge incorrectly. All foods have unique molecular compositions. Some are full of starch and others gluten, and each food reacts differently to its environment. And while we see our refrigerator as a cold preservation box, it wasn’t designed to keep every food item fresh.

To help you save your food from an untimely death, we pulled together a list of grocery items that don’t belong in your fridge, no matter how cold you think they should be! Readmore

12 mental tricks to fight pain

If you're in pain, you may be able to harness your thoughts to help fight it. Skeptical? Studies suggest these pain relief tools can work.

"Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis can learn mind-body techniques to assist the body and mind in relaxing," says Janice M. Singles, Psy.D., of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. The 1 Minute Winged Liner

Simply place the scotch tape along the outer part of your eye- use your lower lash line as a guideline. Take your bent liner brush or any super small makeup brush and apply the eyeliner along the tape, connecting it to your upper lash line. Are you Bipolar? Take the Test that Doctors Use

The Bipolar Spectrum Diagnostic Scale

Today I introduce the Bipolar Spectrum Diagnostic Scale (BSDS). This scale is based off of the Bipolar Clinical Scale developed by Dr. Ronald Pies, later to be refined by Dr. S. Nassir Ghaemi and colleagues. Pies developed this test to detect bipolar disorder within the treatment-resistant depression population. The BSDS is based off the most helpful questions Pies developed.

The cool thing about this scale is that it is designed to detect not just bipolar I and bipolar II, but also “softer” versions of bipolar disorder like other bipolar and related disorders (previously known as bipolar NOS).

The BSDS was scientifically validated and has a 0.85 specificity. (Yes, this means it doesn’t catch all cases of bipolar disorder. No test can be expected to.) Readmore

How to Remove Ear Wax- Remedy To Blocked Ears

Earwax, more scientifically called “cerumen” and sometimes spelled in two words as “ear wax,” is a substance secreted in the ear canal. It cleans and lubricates the area, and helps fight against bacteria, insects and fungi. The wax forms in the outer third of the ear canal, and normally leaves the ear due to jaw motion from chewing and talking. However, cleaning ears with Q-tips, bobby pins, paper clips, wet napkin corners or a pinky finger, can push this wax further into the ear, plugging the canal.

Using Removal Kits

An effective remedy for cleaning your ears of cerumen is through a kit that combines a softening liquid solution and a flushing tool, also called an irrigator. Such kits also have additional accessories such as basin or earplugs that are nice to have but not required. You can also buy the liquid and tools separately, which is useful if you prefer the solution from one manufacturer and the tool from another. This will naturally be more expensive than buying a kit.Readmore

8 Reasons Why I Don’t Wear Daily Sunscreen

Almost every health or women’s magazine recommends we wear daily sunscreen in an effort to protect us from cancer and skin damage. For years I followed their advice, but then I learned about the toxic chemicals in most sunscreens and our need for unprotected sunlight each day. As I’ve often found – when I educated myself on the topic, I learned some new information that completely changed how I think about sunscreen and the sun.
  • The skin is the body’s largest organ. More importantly, “Substances placed on the skin can penetrate into the underlying tissue and eventually reach the blood stream.”
  • Most sunscreens contain toxic chemicals.
  • 500 of the most popular sunscreens may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer. Environmental Working Group.ReadMore

Do You Really Know What Food Labels Really Mean?

There seems to be a new food label popping up all the time and many of them can be confusing. Knowing what a food claim truly means is a great way to educate yourself about where your food comes from and how it has been produced.

Food Claims and What They Actually Mean:

Antibiotic-Free:

means that an animal was not given antibiotics during its lifetime.

Cage-Free:

means that the birds are raised without cages. What this doesn’t explain is whether the birds were raised outdoors or indoors in overcrowded conditions. If you are looking to buy eggs, poultry, or meat that was raised outdoors, look for a label that says “pastured” or “pasture-raised.”

Grass-Fed:

means the animal was fed grass rather than grain. A “grass-fed” label doesn’t mean the animal necessarily ate grass its entire life. Some grass-fed cattle are “grain-finished,” which means they ate grain from a feedlot prior to slaughter.

Grape Fruit: Medicine For Diabetes:19 Other Benefits

The grapefruit (Citrus × paradise- the “x” stands for hybrid) is a subtropical citrus tree known for its tart and tangy taste, with an underlying sweetness. Grapefruits are related to the orange, lemon and pomelo, have either yellow or pinkish-yellow skin and categorized as white (blond), pink or ruby, based on the color of their flesh. The wonderful flavor of a grapefruit is like paradise as is expressed by its Latin name, Citrus paradise.

19 REFRESHING HEALTH SECRETS OF GRAPEFRUIT:

Acidity:

Grapefruit juice has an alkaline reaction after digestion, neutralizing the acidity in the stomach.
Atherosclerosis: Grapefruit contains Pectin that is effective in reducing the accumulation of arterial deposits, and vitamin C helps to strengthen and maintain the elasticity of arteries.

Cancer:

Bioflavonoids found in grapefruit eliminates excess estrogen, and fight carcinogens in breast cancer patients. Pectin acts as a bulk laxative, protecting the colon mucous membrane from stomach and pancreatic cancer. Lycopene along with Vitamin A fight lung cancer and oral cancer. Naringenin, a flavonoid helps to repair damaged DNA in prostate cancer cells.

World’s Oldest Myth: Milk Is Good For Your Bones.

Milk from many animals, particularly cows, has long been a regular food staple for many, but not all, cultures. It provides other food sources such as cheese, yogurt, butter and kefir and is a source of protein, vitamin D and calcium. But is Milk the “Super Food” as we have been made to believe?
Health Issues due to Milk consumption:

Lactose intolerance:

Lactose is a sugar usually digested in the intestinal tract. Many people lack or lose the ability to digest lactose and will suffer from significant bowel cramping, bloating or even loose bowels upon consuming dairy products.

Potato chips are fun snacks to munch on while watching a movie or football game. In fact, they taste great with almost everything - cream cheese dips, spreads, salsa, guacamole, even ice cream (yes, we've seen this many times). Of course, if you're a purist, chips are fine just by themselves.

We know they're not too healthy, but how bad can it get? After all, they're potatoes and a source of energy. At the very most, after wolfing down a bag of chips, you have the choice of eating less rice at dinner to prevent a carbohydrate overload, right?

Wrong.

The problem with the common potato chip is that it's got an ingredient that's not friendly to balanced diets: trans-fats.Readmore

10 Things Your Hair Stylist Doesn't Want You to Know

You may love your hair stylist. He may make you look like a star, massage your scalp like nobody's business, embody the very concept of drop-dead genuine flattery.

He is also getting paid. Which is not to say you don't have the thickest, shiniest hair he's ever seen. It's simply to point out that what he tells you, or doesn't tell you, may not come from a place of absolute objectivity.

Or even absolute knowledge. While some stylists have been taking care of hair for 40 years, others graduated from beauty school five minutes ago.

Here, we present you with 10 facts your hair stylist may be tinkering with, leaving out or not know at all.

To begin with, if something seems counterintuitive, you should sometimes trust that assessment.Readmore

10 Secrets Of Happy Women

Seek joy in the small stuff

The value of taking time to appreciate positive experiences seems obvious—trite, even.

Yet it's a skill that few people have mastered, says Loyola University Chicago social psychologist Fred B. Bryant, PhD. The reason is simple: We're busy, and we have a lot on our minds. There'll always be other sunrises, we say to ourselves, but if we don't hit the shower soon, we'll never beat the traffic to work. Under the weight of our daily responsibilities and worries, we reflexively tune out the fleeting, spontaneous events that could bring us deeper joy and greater health.Readmore
